not starting from scratch. i worked very closely with america's cup. the people's plan was a product of a lot of community input and a lot of those concerns and issues came right out of the same area of the waterfront we're talking about now. because that was so recently gathered, that input, that became a great foundation for us to say, hey, if you've already spent some of those 260 meetings we had in the last two years in the america's cup, your thoughts, your comments weren't wasted on us. we recorded them, actually color-coded them to make sure i took track of what we heard in the beginning of 2010, what we heard in 2011, what we heard in 2012. these are actually online. hosted by wed's website. there are pages and pages of community input about transit, about pedestrian safety, about accessibility, about employers worried about their employees getting to work. and we also wanted to make sure that we had comments resolved in time because we had a great experience with the america's cup. and ware going to have more experiences with the america's cup. last year was the first test of what is

america. the government plays can -- and pays contruction companies for certain work to be completed. those federal dollars will go away as an automatic occurrence. everyone is trying to figure out what the impact of that will be. if nothing is done about those tax rates, we will go into a recession in 2013. that is one concern, but put that on the sidelines for the moment. the community recognizes that taxes are going higher. if you talk about your income, your dividends, or your capital gains, if you make money on those, you will pay a lower tax than in 2013. the uncertainty of where tax rates will be is really the biggest issue for corporate america sitting on cash. there is $3.50 trillion on balance sheets right now. you can imagine, i understand why they are sitting got it because i am not sure what their economic story will look like in 2013. we don't know if we will see the spending programs cut that will lead to layoffs. many will look at their situation and say that the federal money is going away, we don't need this set of employees anymore. both of these concerns as they r

to see america get involved in this? >> it's an interesting and important question. few things. this wasn't planned but it was interesting the president and hillary clinton were in asia at the time that all this began happening because for some time now there has been an attempted pivot towards foreign policy away from the middle east and asia. as gaza shows that's still the world's hot spot and we have to be there. i do think, though, that there's going to be more pressure. the u.s. is not going to say quite this is your problem to the region, but there is going to be more pressure for egypt to get involved. we don't quite know what kind of a leader president morsi is yet. we're all watching and learning. egypt will have to be an important part of the solution. the door between egypt and gaza was pretty much shut during the mubarak era. despite morsi being a member of the muslim brotherhood. it's still pretty closed. egypt has 80 mill enpeople, many whom are are poor, i think they're probably on the fence about wanting to take responsibility for another 1.6, 1.8 people in gaza although i

the libya war was kicking off, president obama was in south america. in 2006 when the lebanon war was kicking off, president bush at the time was in germany. when you are the president, the presidency travels with you. when international crises happen, you weigh in no matter where you are. and president obama is weighing in right now with clear support for israel, but he's also put putting the weight of the united states behind the idea of de-escalation, encouraging israel to not, for example, start the ground war they are threatening to start. that position is essentially where most of the world is with this conflict right now. the head of the united nations went to egypt today where he would appeal personally for deescalating the violence. why did he go to egypt? after ousting hosni mo bark, negotiations are going on as we speak and i hope we will reach something soon that will stop the violence and counter-violence. the whole world is working on trying to deescalate this conflict. the european union weighed in today as did russia. russia preparing a u.n. resolution calling for

% last year. corporate america is holding on to its cash, tightly. a new report reveals 40 of the largest publicly-traded companies plan to hold back on captial investments for the next two years. overall, business investments are down for the first time since 2009. it's attributed to fiscal cliff fears on capitol hill. corporate america has been one of the most public groups to urge congress to avert going over the cliff. reportedly, the corporate sector has started protecting its profits much like it did during the financial crisis. the housing market continues to heal. existing home sales and home prices both edged up in october according to the national association of realtors. sales of previously owned homes rose 2.1%, exceeding economists' expectations. the median price of those homes climbed 11.1% to $178,600. additionally, the number of homes on the market decreased 1.4% to 2.14 million, the fewest since december 2002. the gains are said to have a positive effect on consumer confidence and spending. 26 billion dollars - that's the amount big banks say has been given to help strugg

the courageous men and women that made america what it is, i'm reminded we too went through challenging periods, when america was divided by a bitter civil war 150 years ago. president abraham lincoln had the vision to pull us together toward a shared goal of peace and prosperity. growing up in california i didn't know much about the arab world. then after graduating from the university of california at berkeley, i traveled to north africa as peace corps engineer. i worked as an english teacher in morocco two years and quickly grew to love this part of the world. since joining the service i spent almost my entire career in middle east and africa. one of the things that impressed me were people old enough to have lived and traveled in the united states when we had closer relations. those days are back. we had 1,700 libyans apply for fullbright grants to study in the united states this year, more than any other country in the world. we know that libya is still recovering from an intense period of conflict. there are many courageous libyans who bear the scars of that battle. we are happy we have b
